Considering purchasing a home in San Ramon or around the Tri-Valley area? Are you a senior citizen looking to buy, rent or potentially lease a new property? Here are some of the top home buying mistakes that seniors can make when considering purchasing a new property, home or condominium.
Not considering transportation. Transportation should be important when a senior citizen is considering moving. We you be taking the bus? Driving? How easy will it be to access public transportation, healthcare facilities, stores, friends, and family?
Not just transportation but the distance to friends and family. You might also consider how far you want to be away from your grandkids, children, friends or other family members. Are you moving out of the city? Mark all of these things which need to be considered if you want to be close to friends and family in your golden years.
Not using a buyer’s agent. Many seniors have purchased many homes in the past but laws, rules, and regulations change as well as documents and requirements. Having a buyer’s agent that specifically deals with senior purchases can make the process easy and less confusing. You can make sure that all of your I’s are dotted and all of your T’s are crossed.
Not considering the stairs. Stairs may not be an issue right now but if you’re planning on staying in the home for several years you might consider the future and your mobility. Single floor layouts with minimal stairs even at the entryway and level driveways can make for a much easier living environment. Check for nonslip flooring, grab bars in the bathroom and lever door handles to make life as easy as possible, not only now but in the future.
Not familiarizing yourself with surrounding areas. If you’re moving to a new community you may want to learn as much as you can about it before finalizing any purchase and sale contracts. Do they have an active senior center? Can you walk to your favorite coffee shop? Are your favorite amenities close by? Is the community quiet or geared to your lifestyle? Know as much as you can before purchasing to make your move easy and as comfortable as possible.
