Moving can be a pain, but with these quick tips you can move and relocate easier than ever before. But the key is starting early. Here are my top 10 moving hacks.
#1. Take Inventory by Camera
Take pictures of everything. It’s a great way to naturally take inventory for homeowner’s insurance but it can also make packing and unpacking a breeze. Side Note: Take a picture of the back of your TV and Computer where everything plugs in.. trust me, you’ll thank me later.
#2. Put your house on a diet.
Houses gain weight over time so think to yourself, how much do I want to pack and unpack this again? Get rid of 10 items per day, either donate, sell, throw away or give away. Things will feel much lighter when packing day arrives.
#3. Clean the Linens.
Put your washer and dryer in overdrive by washing everything and then packing it away clean. Use large vacuum sealed bags to hold clean sheets, pillows, comforters, duvets, and towels.
#4. Get rid of boxes you’ve never unpacked.
Unless it’s sentimental or nostalgic items, get rid of boxes that you haven’t opened since your last move. You obviously don’t need it.
#5. Toss things you don’t move.
Cleaning brushes, toilet scrubbers, old rags, cleaning supplies all can be left or thrown away when you move.
#6. Keep your “First Day” Box with you.
This is the box that has your coffee maker, toilet paper, soap, drinks, snacks, sheets, towels and things you’ll want to use first. Keep important documents with you at all times as well like passports, birth certificates and titles.
#7. Clean before you move in.
Yes, previous owners should have cleaned but you don’t know that. Take the time to clean the kitchen and bathrooms first – you’ll be glad you did.
#8. Get a final cleaning in the old house.
Take the kids, pets, and other distractions out of the house and do a final cleaning of the old house when you don’t have obstacles making messes behind you, or better yet, have a professional cleaning done.
#9. Get rid of liquids.
Depending on how far in advance you can plan, try not to buy any more liquids because movers won’t pack them. See if you can use what you have without buying more and then wasting it. Switch to powder detergent and try and use up your kitchen liquids before you move.
#10. Create a moving binder.
This will have all your paperwork, mortgage documents, rental agreements, and personal items in it and keep a record of costs for tax purposes.
Moving isn’t usually fun but it can be well-organized if you plan in advance. Considering moving? Give me a call! I’d love to help you plan and move in the San Ramon real estate area.
