9 Ways to Save Money When Moving

Plan on relocating? You probably have already started some sort of a binder or checklist of how to pack, window pack, and what to pack, but you may not have thought of ways to save money while you are relocating.

Here’s a list of 9 Ways to Save Money When Moving

#1. Pack small things yourself.

If you’re planning on hiring a moving company, save a few dollars by packing small stuff yourself. This could be some kitchenware, books, shoes, or any little items especially jewelry and valuables. Make sure you wrap them up tightly and secure them in a spot that won’t be lost or stolen during the move.

#2. Toss unneeded items.

If you have time to plan, this is a great time to get rid of unnecessary items in your home. You can either throw them away or donate them. Even if you have a short amount of time, not moving with every little stitch of garbage, a piece of paper or broken toy will save you a lot of space, time, and money.

#3. Make your packing supplies work double duty.

Use towels and linens to wrap dishes and valuables. Use clothes, bedding, pillows, and blankets as a packing supply.

#4. Ask friends, family, and the Internet for boxes.

Buying boxes can really add up but by putting an ad out on the local marketplace, Craigslist, or other sharing or bartering websites you may find someone who has recently moved and now wants to get rid of their boxes.

#5. Pack things in the original box if possible.

Are you one of those that save every box from a valuable or an electronic device? Wrap it carefully back in the same box and you’ll save yourself time and money.

#6. Consider shipping belongings.

If you’re moving a long distance consider shipping your items rather than hiring a moving company. You might be surprised at how much you save.

#7. Shop around for a moving company.

Obviously, you want the best deal but you also don’t want the cheapest if they don’t take care of your items. Check out the reviews and choose a company you feel comfortable with and can afford.

#8. Pick the right time if possible.

Moving companies can charge more during the busy season or on weekends so if you plan to move during a slow season or during the week, it might save you some money.

#9. Ask for help.

Nobody likes to move but if you ask for a little bit of help with the promise of a six-pack of beer or a pizza at the end of the day, you might get some more assistance.

Moving is never fun but by planning ahead and preparing your family and your belongings, you can save money, time, and stress on your next relocation.
