It seems like a lot of people are renovating and remodeling this spring. Many of the remodeling contractors are already out until the end of summer, so what’s prompting all the remodels? Well, the economy is good, people have received raises, and because home prices are rising, many homeowners are simply remodeling their homes rather than buying new ones. So, what’s in and what’s out and home renovation trends?
The faux Tuscan style decor that was all the rage about 10 years ago is on its way out. Millennial buyers are reshaping the real estate market and looking for sleeker, more minimalistic mid-century modern looks and designs. But, this doesn’t mean that you need a $30,000 kitchen renovation. There are some simple and easy things you can do to update your interior and make it more appealing to today’s buyers.
Homebuyers in their 30s and 40s are not looking for fancy crown molding and millwork. Heavy drapes, dark wallpaper, and noticeable grout lines are out. Homebuyers looking at homes built in 2007 with fancy kitchen design, marble, granite counters, and even some outdated stainless steel appliances are looking at the kitchen as work. They want to gut it and start all over. Quartz, instead of granite or marble is more appealing to younger buyers who are looking for low maintenance, easy and clean design. Buyers are looking for a low maintenance house altogether. They don’t have the time, energy, or money to fix up the home the way they want it. They’d rather buy a house ready to go.
It’s important to Declutter and this is one of the least expensive things you can do. Simply creating a minimalistic look, clean lines, clean counters, and tables, and neutralizing items are really what is in. White cabinets, white molding and trim, and laminate or natural wood floors add the charm the people are looking for. The warm, tans, chocolates, and latte colors are out. More neutral grays, blues and whites are in.
If you’re planning on selling it’s important to have a home stager design and prepare the house for today’s buyers because they are seeing all types of designs out there. But, if you’re just looking for a remodel, always go with what you want. However, it is important to know what’s trending in case you do want to sell within the next few years.
